Michael Who?

Posted by btsports at 11:11 PM on December 28, 2008

After sitting here watching the Falcons defeat the Rams, I thought to myself Michael who?  The Falcons had made life after Vick a reality instead of a fantasy.  This organization was left for dead after the loss of their QB and coach.  It is amazing to me how fast they have turned it around.  The hiring of Mike Smith was a great decision.  He has brought a toughness to a group that was looking for an identity.  The skill players are all set.  Now raise your hand if you thought the Falcons would be playoff bound at the beginning of the season.  Ok now you can lower your hands and you should be ashamed of yourselves for lying.smile

Not only is Matt Ryan a candidate for Rookie of the Year but he is also in the running for MVP.  This young man looks like a grizzled veteran leading his team up and down the field.  He has stepped in and made people quit whining about the "dog fighter".  This young man has a lot of promise and I selfishly hope he reaches it with the Falcons.

The best off season move in the NFL has to be the Falcons signing Michael "the Burner" Turner.  He is showing everyone that he was just being wasted out in San Diego.  I mean have you seen this guy run?  He bowls people over and never looks back.  His running attack is also a great benefit to Matt Ryan.  The reason I say that is because it allows the Falcons use play action a lot more.  Turner was a diamond in the ruff and I am glad Atlanta decided to dust him off.

I am not sure how far the Falcons will go this year but I think they have the offensive power to stay in the hunt in the NFC for years to come.  No matter what happens, if they sure up the defense in this year's draft I look predict another Superbowl appearance for the Dirty Birds.

Well, that wraps up my first blog.  I hope I didn't put you to sleep. Let me know what you think.  Until then take care.

I agree, This year is exactly what the franchise needed. To get past last years mess. Not taking anything away from Matt Ryan because he has done a great job in his rookie season. But the biggest credit has to go to Michael Tunner and the defense. Tunner's running threat has greatly helped Ryan be as effictient as he has been this year. I can see a possible win for the east coast birds over the west coast this year but that might be it. Also I think that even with the vast improvement, I think a superbowl isnt in the card yet for the falcons. The league ( especially the south ) is just too competitive right now. I hope im wrong and that Ryan dosent have a sophmore slump...and Tunner can be just as explosive next year. Until then Go ATL!

First off, i'm a huge falcon fan, always was (i remember who gerald riggs is) and always will be. now that i ihave said that, matt ryan is a great rookie quaterback and i believe he will only get better. But i believe it was Bill Parcells who was talking about tony romo when he said, lets not get out the annointing oil just yet." The falcons may win the super bowl , but if it happens its only because of the huge chip they have on their shoulder due to the events of last year. I was always skeptic of vick. In my eyes he was hands down the best athlete in football but one of the worst quaterbacks in the league. Yes, he was exciting and you never knew what was gonna happen whenever he touched the ball. He could scramble for 80yards or throw a 169mph fastball that benito santiago couldn't catch. Arthur blank and his team have really done something remarkable with an organization that was tainted by a coach packing up and leaving in the middle of the night and its franchise player being put in fedaral prison. Matt ryan and michael turner should get most of the credit because they came in and brought a new energy to the team. And finally they got rid of Deangelo Hall, who in my mind could be one of the most overrated players in history. Now they only have to live up to the expectations that they have set and the fans have set for them, for years to come. Go falcons!

I just want to add what dawgfan alluded to about getting rid of Deangelo Hall. I think that is a great credit to the Coach and the front office of the organization. In the coaching community, there are those that are referred to as "TURDS" for obvious reasons. Personally, I believe there are VERY FEW successful organizations who are built around "TURDS," and it's very clear that Mike Vick, Deangelo Hall, along with others were "TURDS!" Conversely, I feel that Matt Ryan is a character player with a huge upside. More to come on "TURDS."
